“Hispanic Heritage Month in the year 2020, bears a uniquely significant importance. The global pandemic has shone a light on vital role of Latinos in our economy and society, representing a disproportionate number of essential workers as well as COVID-19 cases. The crucial national dialogue on racial/ethnic justice has also highlighted the inequities Latinos continue to face in today’s America. This is especially disturbing since Hispanics have been present in what is present day USA for over 500 years (long before the establishment of the first British settlement in Jamestown, VA in 1607), helping to build, shape and defend this nation and having a positive impact in every aspect of our culture. Far too many people mistakenly assume that Hispanics are mostly recent immigrant who do not have longstanding ties to the nation. Sadly, the misperceptions of Latino influence and impact have manifested themselves not only in inequality, but also in violence. That is why it is so important to correct the record, to fill in the missing pages in our history books and tell the indispensable stories of Latino contributions in a new national museum. I have been honored to chair the nonprofit working to advance the creation of a new Smithsonian National Museum of the American Latino. The efforts to pass the enabling legislation in Congress have been underway since 2011. This year, on July 27th, the bill passed unanimously in the U.S. House of Representatives and is now being considered in the U.S. Senate. We now stand at the precipice of enshrining an enduring institution that will provide a more complete and accurate picture of the history of our great country and all the communities who sacrificed to build her and simultaneously inspire countless future generations to come”, Vargas stated.
Danny was invited to speak at several events commemorating the month-long observance by corporations, government agencies and more. Examples included Amazon Web Services, Beam-Suntory, Bloomberg Industry Group, Defense Logistics Agency, Department of Energy, DLA Piper, Fairfax County Public Schools, FedEx, George Washington University, JetBlue, MasterCard, Pratt & Whitney, Small Business Administration, and more.
