U.S. Department of Energy Applauds Milestone Year for Internship Program
Washington, D.C. – The United States Department of Energy wrapped up a record-breaking year for its Minority Educational Institution Student Partnership Program (MEISPP). This was the 17th year of the summer program focused primarily on Minority Serving Institutions (MSI) and it reached a high-water mark of 107 interns (more than any previous year). Due to the pandemic, the program was virtual for the second year in a row and had participating students from around the country.
The 10-week program offers talented undergraduate and graduate students summer internship positions with the U.S. Department of Energy and its National Laboratories. Positions involve scientific research or a focus on policy, business, and government relations. Professional development training opportunities have always been a part of the program, but this year introduced webinars from professors at several notable universities, including Cornell, MIT, Yale, and others.
MEISPP operates under the auspices of the Office of Economic Impact and Diversity and for the past nine years has been managed under a contract with VARCom Solutions, a minority and service disabled veteran owned small business. Interns were assigned to program offices throughout the Department of Energy and many of its National Laboratories. “It has been an honor and a privilege to support this vital program. We have been able to interact with hundreds of schools and thousands of fabulous young people, and through preparation and professional development, helped to set them on a course for fulfilling careers in government or the private sector,” stated Danny Vargas, president of VARCom Solutions. He added, “Our faith in the future is strengthened every day when we witness the intelligence, resilience and drive displayed by the MEISPP interns.”
To be eligible, students must be U.S. citizens, maintain an overall GPA of at least 3.0 and be enrolled as a full time student. To learn more, visit https://www.energy.gov/diversity/minority-educational-institution-student-partnership-program-meispp-internships.
