VARCom President Applauds Publication of Report on Police Oversight and Accountability in Virginia
Herndon, VA – VARCom Solutions Founder/President, Danny Vargas, who served as Chairman of the Virginia State Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, applauded the issuance of the recent report on Police Oversight and Accountability in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The report synthesized the testimony of several expert witnesses over a two-year period and provided a list of recommendations to The Commission which included suggested communications to the U.S. Department of Justice; the Virginia Governor, Attorney General, General Assembly, as well as the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services; and the Joint Legislative Audit & Review Commission of Virginia.
The report included an opening statement from Chairman Vargas as follows:
“The women and men of law enforcement have an incredibly difficult yet vitally important job to protect our citizens and maintain good order. They also are the front-line guardians of our liberties. Their service and sacrifice are deserving of our respect, admiration, and appreciation. The overwhelming majority of officers are decent, ethical, and dedicated public servants, which makes it all the more devastating when incidents occur that break the covenant of trust between citizens and law enforcement. It is for these reasons that every effort must be made to ensure best practices in policing are established, maintained, and followed to avoid these incidents and patterns so as to protect our civil rights and freedoms. The good people of Virginia deserve our collective commitment to a law enforcement system that exists to serve and protect and is devoted to the greatest principles of fairness and equality. The Committee intends that the recommendations put forth in this report are considered by the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and relevant stakeholders in the Commonwealth in order to fulfill said principles.”
“It was truly a great honor to chair this important effort and shed light on this vital issue”, stated Vargas. He added, “Huge thanks to all of the many witnesses who testified and for the hard work and diligence of the Committee members and staff who made this landmark report possible.”
